Ballrooms est le nouveau projet d'Andrew Graham prévu pour l'automne 2023 à laGeste. Il exploite le cadre du bal pour atteindre deux objectifs en même temps. Il mise sur l'évolution de nouvelles danses de couple et réinvente la danse de salon en revisitant ses schémas de genre classiques. Il puise son inspiration dans les réalisations de la culture du ballroom à New York dans les années 1970 : un refuge pour une communauté marginalisée qui a perfectionné ses propres codes et styles de danse avec une grande virtuosité.
En même temps, Ballrooms exprime l'ambition de créer, à travers le spectacle, un lieu de rencontre au cœur de la ville, réunissant des individus dont les trajectoires ne se croiseraient pas spontanément sans Ballrooms : danseurs en situation de handicap, la communauté queer, des réfugiés, les membres du chœur de laGeste (issus du remarquable spectacle Mein Gent de l'été dernier), ainsi que les participants aux ateliers inclusifs proposés par laGeste.
En prenant le cadre du bal comme point de départ formel, Graham crée un espace propice au maintien d'une certaine fluidité dans la répartition des rôles, que ce soit entre interprète et spectateur, professionnel et amateur, répétition, improvisation et démonstration. La distinction habituellement nette entre ces rôles dans le contexte traditionnel du théâtre laisse place à un espace dépourvu de hiérarchie, qui encourage la participation sans être contraignant. Le vaste Studio laGeste situé sur la Bijlokekaai se prête parfaitement à cette approche.
La conception scénographique est confiée à Vera Martynov, une femme de théâtre russe vivant en exil à Marseille. Sur le plan musical, diverses collaborations sont mises en œuvre, notamment avec plusieurs DJ, ainsi qu'avec le chœur de laGeste, qui s'immisce dans chaque représentation en apportant des harmonies surprenantes. Le public et les artistes ont la possibilité de changer de look en utilisant des costumes et des accessoires issus du stock des Ballets C de la B (Gardenia, etc.).
La performance est structurée en plusieurs sections distinctes, incluant de la musique live, un défilé, un chant collectif, des improvisations dirigées et encadrées, ainsi qu'une démonstration des nouvelles danses de couple. Au cours de la préparation et des répétitions, Andrew Graham est épaulé par une équipe artistique diversifiée, comprenant Vera Martynov, déjà citée, le danseur britannique Dan Daw, ainsi que les Belges Gilles Pollet et Arno Ferrera (du célèbre duo de cirque Cuir) et Tijen Lawton.
La mise en scène est toutefois confiée à Andrew Graham, une figure centrale du travail de laGeste en tant que chorégraphe. Sa compagnie l'Autre Maison, basée à Marseille, a inspiré laGeste à mettre en place une opération inclusive à Gand. Après les ateliers hebdomadaires depuis avril 2021, il est désormais temps d'intégrer ce travail préparatoire essentiel au cœur de l'initiative : la création de nouvelles productions.
Ballrooms marque ainsi le premier pas dans cette direction.

Public images
During events organised by laGeste, an ambience photographer is regularly present. These pictures may be published on our website, through social media and in our printed material. These are mainly pictures of the artists and pictures of the audience. Sporadically you may be recognisable as a spectator in one of the photos. All photos are stored on laGeste's secure server.
Very occasionally, events are filmed. This footage can be used via social media or edited into a promotional film afterwards. It may happen that members of the public are recognised in this, although we do not focus on faces.
