Pour les metteurs en scène Frank Van Laecke et Alain Platel, Mein Gent est la réalisation d’un rêve partagé et caressé depuis longtemps : rendre hommage à Gand, la ville dans laquelle ils sont étroitement imbriqués. Les deux Gantois se sont trouvés il y a dix ans dans la création des spectacles de théâtre musical. Soutenus par les paysages sonores du compositeur Steven Prengels, à chaque création ils plongent dans un univers particulier d’où ils racontent les petites et grandes tragédies de la vie. Souvenez-vous de Gardenia en 2010 ou encore d’ En avant, marche ! en 2015.
Mein Gent est du pur théâtre populaire qui explore sans vergogne l'œuvre de Romain Deconinck et d’Eric De Volder. Flirtant avec toutes les limites possibles du genre lui-même.
Pascale Platel, Ineke Nijssen, Gorges Ocloo et Steve De Schepper sont accompagnés dans leur quête par un grand groupe de Gantois. Ensemble, ils s'interrogent sur l'existence d'un ADN Gantois ou d'un canon Gantois et, tout en associant le public à cette recherche, ils le guident à travers leur Gand d'hier, d'au-jourd'hui et de demain. Ou à la vie d'hier, d'aujourd'hui et de demain. Ludique, drôle, hilarant, fantai-siste, bizarre, émouvant, vif, poignant, mais surtout réconfortant.
Mein Gent est une représentation qui se déroule comme une opérette. Ou ce que, pour les créateurs, l'opérette peut être aujourd'hui.
