Macc(h)abées

Sophie Warnant | cie Sujet Barré

"Sometimes it seems as if a performance remains tucked away, held back and hidden,
to protect it from the excessive and overwhelming violence of the outside world …
Macc(h)abées by Sophie Warnant is just such a gem.

I saw this intimate prayer in Studio laGeste and it stayed with me
for a long time afterwards, even as I simply had to step back into the world.

Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to accept this fragile gift,
so generously offered by a unique performer."

Sophie Warnant, originally from Wallonia but now a Brussels resident, is one of those rare actors who also holds her own as a dancer. She doesn’t just do a little dance here and there, but, as a choreographer, distils a wealth of research into one of the most refined yet emotionally charged solos of recent years.

Visual artist Berlinde de Bruyckere was so impressed that she programmed the solo at the Drongenhof Chapel.
However macabre the title Macc(h)abées may sound, it roughly translates as ‘the corpses’, the solo is anything but frightening. Warnant throws herself into the challenge of combating transience, a battle she is doomed to lose, yet one she faces with extraordinary courage and an almost boundless vulnerability.

'The result of all these explorations is equally unique. Warnant did not process them in a conventional documentary or textual way, but through the body. She almost literally ‘embodies’ her subject: year after year, she has allowed all the knowledge and emotions she has acquired to sink into her body, only to bring them back out on stage now in a completely different form.'
