Piet De Volder

Piet De Volder studied musicology at UGent. He works as a dramaturge for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. As (music) dramaturge for the house, he collaborated on Lulu and the integral Der Ring des Nibelungen, each time in productions by Ivo van Hove, on Pelléas et Mélisande, directed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet and on Der Schmied von Gent (Schreker) and Der Silbersee (Weill), productions by Ersan Mondtag. With Edizioni Suvini Zerboni (Milan) and Fundación Autor (Madrid), he published works on the contemporary Spanish composer Luis de Pablo (1930-2021).

In 2011, De Volder published Opera: achter de schermen van de emotie, a collection of essays on opera criticism and dramaturgy with Prof. Dr Francis Maes (UGent) at LannooCampus (Leuven) Opera. In the 2022-'23 season, De Volder will provide the musical dramaturgy for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen's new production of Tristan und Isolde, directed by filmmaker Philippe Grandrieux, and of the Vonk productions Vake Poes; of hoe God verdween (Lisaboa Houbrechts) and Kruistocht. (Johan De Smet).
De Volder is also active as a teacher of dramaturgy at the International Opera Academy (Ghent).
